Building Inspection This Division enforces the Connecticut State Building Code and issues building permits for

  • Construction and alterations of all buildings
  • Swimming pools
  • Tennis courts
  • Signs
  • Special events
  • Demolition of buildings

This building permit does not include zoning approval. There is a separate zoning permit issued by the Zoning Enforcement Officer which is a part of the Planning and Zoning Office. This zoning permit must be obtained prior to filing an application for a new building permit or prior to filing an amendment to an issued building permit. Trade permits, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) are also issued by this office.

Inspections are made by building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC inspectors at critical stages of construction to ensure compliance with all applicable codes.

The Building Official enforces all state and local codes and ordinances governing the construction of buildings and other structures, including all mechanical and electrical systems contained within.

New Public Act 12-184 - Effective October 1, 2012: This is an Act concerning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and alarms in residential dwellings during renovations. Click Here for the notice from from the Acting State Building Inspector.

New Residential Generator Inspection Guidelines - Effective March 1, 2012: Since the two extended power outages last fall the Division of Building Inspection has experienced a large increase in generator permits and inspections of same. This has created a backlog of inspections and lengthy waiting times for electrical and plumbing inspections. Therefore, as of March 1, 2012 the Division has instituted new inspection procedures for residential generators, that are applicable only to those permits filed on or after March 1, 2012. The electrical and plumbing inspections have been combined in hopes of streamlining the inspection process and reducing the number of inspection trips , therefore, hopefully also reducing the waiting time for all electrical and plumbing inspections.
